The Upper Midwest Region recently utilized the World Cafe Conversation model in the October 15th All Congregational Gathering. This was very successful in allowing all voices and ideas, to be heard. This model has been used in many congregations for leadership training, working through conversations that are specific to a congregation, such as ‘visioning’ for the future, and as a part of the Search and Call process — all to a fabulous response!

In fact, these conversations are becoming so popular, that it’s time to bring more folks
into leadership. We’re hoping that is you!

This informal* training will take place on Wednesday, ending early enough that most of you could be back in time for Wednesday events at your church! (Ends at 2:00 pm)

Who is encouraged to attend this World Cafe training?
* Those who might like to use this process in the wider Region
* Those who might like to use this with their congregation
* Those who might like to use this with their community.
* Those who are curious
* Those looking for an excellent experience on Nov. 9th!

Pentecost!

Pentecost — the Church’s celebration of the start of new communities of Christ-followers. This Sunday, June 12th, many churches collect a special offering for the New Church movement among Disciples. In the second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles, the early church is described with a few crisp qualities:

- They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
- Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles.
- All who believed were together and had all things in common;
- they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need.
- Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

New churches don’t just form out of nothing. Lots of love, care, and gifts go into these new communities. Gifts of money, prayer and energy that other congregations can often share. One of these new communities in our region is Open Source Rochester in Rochester, MN.

Feel free to use this video when talking about new churches forming in Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2smJD0K0An8

Thanks to Rebecca Haney of Open Source Rochester for the video.  And extra-special thanks to Amy Spangler-Dunning for creating this video.  (Amy is a member of the New Church Unit for the region.)

Responding with Week of Compassion in Joplin, MO

The tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri on May 22nd caused lots of devastation and death. Disciples in the Joplin area lost many homes and had damage to their church buildings. Mike Weinman, area minister in the Mid-America region, wrote:

On Tuesday last week I was walking with Jill Michel, the senior pastor of South Joplin Christian Church. We were visiting some of her members’ homes — at least the places where they once stood. We came to the home of Avis Stiles, 91 years young. Her children, Amy Duell of Colorado and Richard Stiles of Kansas City, were at the home, looking through the splintered wood that once made up her walls and the shattered furniture they used to sit on during their visits home.

We stood in a circle, sharing stories of how “Mother” tried to make it to the bathroom during the tornado in search of a safe space. All of a sudden, however, the front door disappeared and the walls crumbled.

When she realized where she was, she was almost waist deep in the remains of a shattered home. …

Read the rest of Mike’s reflections in the PDF Week of Compassion Update

Of the two Disciples congregations in the Joplin area, South Joplin Christian Church had damage to their sanctuary, fellowship hall and basement. 600 gallons of water pumped out of basement following the storm. First Christian Church thankfully didn’t have damage. The first night it served as an emergency shelter, but once the better emergency shelters were setup, it served as a supplies depot to coordinate the “things” people needed following the storm.

Many people ask, “what can I do?!?”

For now, the best way that you can respond is to “Pray, Pay, and Stay”: pray for all of those affected, that they might find healing, hope, and support. Provide a donation to Week of Compassion’s response fund, which will go to meet immediate needs and long-term recovery initiatives. Finally, wait. There will be opportunities to lend a hand. However, now is not the time for unskilled volunteers.

Week of Compassion already has responded with solidarity grants for the Joplin community. To learn more about how your gifts through Week of Compassion can make a difference to those affected by the storms, go to: www.weekofcompassion.org

Senior Adult Retreat

Dear fellow pilgrims,

Here is an invitation that I hope you can’t resist! You are warmly invited (encouraged, urged) to attend the Senior Adult Retreat, Christian Conference Center, Newton, IA – Sunday, September 11– Tuesday, September 13, 2011

The retreat theme is “Renew Your Mind”, and we will be learning a great deal from our keynote speakers (Roslyn Gunnick, Sue Woods, Adam Frieberg, and Julie Gibson). Thanks to medical advances we live longer and healthier. As we live longer lives, how do we keep our minds fresh? Join us as we learn together about the brain and aging, life long learning, spiritual practices, and the tools of technology we can use today.

We’ll have interesting keynotes, meaningful worship, and great singing. Add to that, lots of fellowship activities, leisure activities, wonderful food, comfortable lodging, and an optional work project to benefit the Conference Center. What a grand 48 hours!

And here is good news: The cost is $100 to stay in the Lodge at the Conference Center (2 nights & 6 meals). What a deal!

We will be collecting an offering at our closing worship to help us raise funds for “camperships” (camp scholarships) to help our young people attend church camp next summer. This Holy Ground has been a blessing to many, and we would like to help others experience God in this place.

Our planning committee has been working hard to provide a retreat that will enrich our lives and deepen our spiritual growth. We hope that you will make this event a high priority ~ and plan to attend!

We are really looking forward to being with you on Sunday, September 11 – Tuesday, September 13. Hope you will put those dates on your calendar right now, then fill out a registration form and send it to the Conference Center.

Peace to you,

Sue Woods (College Ave CC, Des Moines)
Suzanne Stout (First Christian Church, Des Moines)
Karen Fausch (First Christian Church, Nevada, IA)

2011 Retreat Co-Coordinators

May 2011

She smiled and jumped up and down when I told her that she could go to camp! It touched my heart because it reminded me of a similar moment when I was 12 and my home church paid for my camp registration so that I could go to camp for the first time too. I am forever thankful for that moment because it helped set me on a path that totally changed my life. May all the campers who go to camp this summer experience nothing sort of a change in life while on our Holy Ground in Newton IA.

A few weeks ago we, as Disciples Together, also had a life changing moment together. I don’t know that anyone jumped up and down, but there were a lot of smiles and excitement in the sanctuary at Highland Park CC. I hope that you will seriously plan to attend as we prepare to gather together on October 15th to discern what God might be calling us to do together as Disciple congregations in the Upper Midwest. Every church is essential to this process. I pray, as your new Regional Minister and President, that God will make visible all the ways God wants us to do ministry together.

Wii Bowling Tournament at Lake Harriet CC

On March 20th, 22 members of Lake Harriet Christian Church in Minneapolis, MN gathered for their Wii Bowling for Beans Tournament.  The bowlers, ages 9 to 89, competed using the popular Nintendo video game platform.  The church family raised $804.00 for the Joyce Food Shelf in South Minneapolis through this tournament.

Special thanks to new Partner Regional Minister, Tammy Rottschaeffer, for sharing the story.

Bill Spangler-Dunning called as Regional Minister and President

At 9:30, before the Assembly, the Regional Board met to respond to a recommendation from the region’s Personnel unit.

In January a survey went out to all clergy, was mailed to congregations, and was available on the regional website – asking for opinions and feedback on Bill Spangler-Dunning’s leadership and the region’s transition time. Based on the survey results, the Personnel unit recommended the board immediately call Bill as the “settled” regional minister.

Tim Diebel, current regional moderator and pastor of FCC Des Moines, noted to the assembly that Bill is owed sabbatical time and the Personnel unit prefers he take that time sooner rather than later.

With Don Hiscox’s retirement, and with Bill Spangler-Dunning’s upcoming sabbatical, the region is short-staffed. So beginning with this assembly (on April 9th), four current regional members are being raised up as Partner Regional Ministers.

  • Bill Mitchell – Keokuk, Iowa
  • Julie Gibson – Newton, Iowa
  • Jim Wakelin – Ottumwa, Iowa
  • Tammy Rottschaefer – Minneapolis, Minnesota

will be serving as regional staff part-time. They’ll be serving in whatever capacity is needed; but specifically, they’ll work with congregations in “search and call,” and pastoral and congregational care.

These four will still continue to work in their congregations, but the region will be “renting” some of their time, hence why their titles will be Partner Regional Ministers. The regional “office” will still function normally. Connie Derby Dicks will still be fielding calls and directing our staff best suited to handle your needs.

FCC Davenport dedicates remodeled sanctuary front

Wondrous God, the skies and the highest heavens cannot contain you, much less temples made by human hands. yet you dwell on this earth among us and make yourself known in sacred space and time. Receive this house afresh for your glory as we rededicate this chancel and ourselves to your service.

- Part of the “Prayer of Rededication” at FCC Davenport, after they opened up and removed the choir lofts from the front of the worship space.

“Bless This Dress” ministry idea from FCC Keokuk

“Do you know your worth?
More than diamonds hidin’ on a shelf
Do you know who you are?
God has made you a shining star”

Nicole C. Mullens in “Baby Girl”

It’s spring cleaning time, and if you’re like many families that used to have high schoolers living with you, then you probably have leftover clothes — in particular, formal wear. They’re still perfectly good clothes, but do you know who would take them? Is your only option to throw them away?

That was a problem in Keokuk, IA. Marge Lightfoot, a member of the church helps at the local consignment shop – and the shop does not take prom dresses or wedding dresses for resale, since they’re seasonal and “don’t move.”

When Marge brought the idea to Cathie Courtois (for campers, Miss Cathie) and Janel Quinlan, Minister of Children and Minister of Youth and Young Adults (respectively), the idea stuck.

“When Marge came and asked us if we could give these dresses to girls who needed them, Bless This Dress was born,” Miss Cathie recalls.

The church invited girls from the community to come pick out a dress on a Sunday afternoon in early March. That day they gave away 21. Demand didn’t stop, especially as prom quickly approached and church members kept talking up the program on Facebook. To date they’ve given away 40 dresses!

Geoff Mitchell, senior minister at FCC Keokuk, bragged on Facebook how this was another ministry that can happen without pastors. “Needless to say I was not there, but am excited it was happening. What a gift to the community!”

Something old, something new … (Called Assembly Summary)

The Resolution brought by the Vision Task Force, and forwarded by the Regional Board, aims to restructure regional decision making. After presentations, a 90-minute question and answer period, the voting church representatives voted 195 in favor, 4 opposing, and 2 abstaining (blank ballots) to adopt this new structure.

Randy Ehrhardt, minister of West Des Moines Christian Church, presented the resolution in a presentation/lecture/sermon/pep-talk/story/confession.

“It’s so easy for preachers, for all of us really, to lose our voices. Often to things completely out of our control.
We use them too much; or our listening skills have been in hiatus. Sometimes we’re no longer heard because what we have to say is no longer relevant.

For many reasons, the Christian Church in the Upper Midwest found itself not being heard as much.

It wasn’t that vast numbers of people were upset with the region. In many ways, that would have been easier to deal with. Because during this time, there was some absolutely amazing ministry happening. We need to be grateful for all the faithful decisions made during those years and all the hope that was proclaimed!

We’re here to move on today. The average person sitting in the pew is no longer feeling connected. In many ways, apathy is tougher to deal with than negativity.

The region needed to do something before its voice was down to a whisper.

When “Disciples Together” spread throughout the region, it found our vocal cords. It was a movement toward a new way, and … also an old way, of being church. A powerful reminder of how the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) started in the first place. And how we flourished across the great frontier.

Our charge: what new structure would complement our new vision? We unite around God-inspired calls. Ministries are developed around relationships, passion, discernment. Finding out our passions for ministry and exploring ways to do them. People who feel a call, to do something together in God’s name — I think I can get excited about that.

Earlin Shanno, minister of Oakland Christian Church, offered the benefits as he saw them as a pastor of a small church:

“Small churches are going to have equal representation! I don’t have to get a letter anymore that says “if you have less than 100 people in your church, you only get this …” We can come to an event, vote, be heard, and enjoy being church. So for me, this new vision is about carrying us all together in God’s name.

Dave Clark, minister of Ankeny Christian Church, pointed out that :

How do we get laity more involved in the church? We’ve all read Acts, chapter 2, and we know that when the Disciples come together, what happened? Fire! We wanted fire, energy, passion. And we wanted to build a structure that wasn’t clergy-dominated. We looked at our history and said “you know what? No one ever thought it was a good idea to have a Disciples pope!” Nobody ever said “let’s have a church run by the clergy because they’re so wonderful!”

So how do we transition? How do we have it so laity are coming up with the ideas and the agenda for our region? How does it become something that’s not top-down like every other bureaucracy? We do it with the people gathered together, sensing what God is doing in their midst – connecting.

Our vision is based on a fundamental idea: when people get together, there’s passion, there’s fire, and the world can change. We’ve read the book. We know the story. Now we have to re-align our history, our agenda, with what we know we’re supposed to be about. So this structure liberates the laity and puts them in charge. And we made it hard for the clergy to take over.

“Pastors’ Class” Retreat held at Norwalk CC

hosted at Norwalk CC

Twenty-four youth from eight congregations gathered at Norwalk Christian Church on April 1-2 for the annual Pastor’s Class Retreat. Youth participated in workshops on prayer, communion, baptism, membership, and the Bible. The retreat also included games, snacks, devotions, singing, movies, and camp promotion. Sleep not included :) .

Spiritual Feasting: a gathering of souls feasting on God’s spiritual food

One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God …

Would you like to be more intentional about your relationship with God?  There is a tradition of Christian spiritual practices which has for centuries guided believers in their day to day relationships with God and the world.

Come, explore, and experience some of these practices and get a taste of a richer, more fulfilling way to live with God.
