Come to the Table
“We are the Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s table as God has welcomed us.”
-Dr. Sharon Watkins, General Minister and President 21st Century Vision Team
The table is a central image to our understanding of ourselves as Disciples. The table is the place where we are drawn together as invited guests. The table is a place of invitation, conversation, and transformation. The table is where we are called to become the gift of reconciliation!
When we gather to receive the bread and the cup, God challenges us to examine ourselves and the sin that separates us from full participation in the one body of Christ. The table is a reminder that we are to actively seek healing, wholeness, and true community in the midst of division and hostility in our society and world. The call of reconciliation is the call of World Communion Sunday; a call for Christian unity which begins at the Lord ’s Table.
Dr. Michael Mooty, pastor of Central Christian Church in Lexington, Kentucky, once wrote, “We Disciples do a remarkable thing when we gather at the Table. In a world that expends a great deal of energy separating people from one another, dividing us into opposing camps, labeling us as red or blue, black or white, what we do every Sunday in celebrating the Lord’s Supper is a radical, counter-cultural act of hospitality.”
Your gift to the Reconciliation Ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will empower others to come to the table and become the gift of reconciliation.
